Estate Planning

Overview

Estate Planning focuses on the use, conservation, and efficient transfer of an individual’s wealth.

The course addresses the law of property, wills, trusts, future interests, estate administration, insurance, income taxation, gift taxation, and death taxation.

Covers the CFP Board’s Principal Knowledge Topics H.63–72.

Recommended study time: Allow at least 10 hours per week for adequate course preparation.

Prerequisites

Academic Preparation

There are no special degree requirements to participate in the FSU Certificate in Financial Planning program, although instruction is presented at the level of an upper-division college course.

A bachelor’s degree is a condition of CFP® certification, but it is not required in order to sit for the Certification Examination.

Students are strongly encouraged to complete Introduction to Financial Planning before taking this course.

Computer Skills

Students should have basic computer literacy, including the ability to:

  • Connect to the internet and navigate the web.
  • Use email and online discussion tools.
  • Send and receive email attachments.
  • Save, open, and manage files using common software.

J.R. Saginario holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Florida State University and is both a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® and Accredited Estate Planner®. He has more than 25 years of experience serving families across banking, mortgages, credit, insurance, investments, and holistic wealth strategy.

In addition to leading the Estate Planning segment for the FSU Financial Planning program, he is an adjunct professor at Tallahassee State College.

His community service includes roles with Elder Care Services, the Tallahassee Regional Estate Planning Council of the Community Foundation of North Florida, the Economic Club of Florida, St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and Florida State University Music Associates.
