Income Tax Planning
Overview
Tax planning is an integral part of achieving an individual’s financial goals.
This course covers specific knowledge of tax calculation, accounting, and the impact of business structures in a planning context. Financial planners need a strong general working knowledge of tax law in order to effectively assist their clients.
The course discusses the “tools” of income tax planning, including compliance, computation of tax, and character of income, as well as planning “techniques” such as timing income and deductions, charitable planning, and planning for the sale of assets.
Covers the CFP Board’s Principal Knowledge Topics F.42–51.

Academic Preparation
There are no special degree requirements to participate in the FSU Certificate in Financial Planning program, although instruction is presented at the level of an upper-division college course.
A bachelor’s degree is a condition of CFP® certification, but it is not required in order to sit for the Certification Examination.
Students are strongly encouraged to complete Introduction to Financial Planning before taking this course.
Computer Skills
Students should have basic computer literacy, including the ability to:
- Connect to the internet and navigate the web.
- Use email and online discussion tools.
- Send and receive email attachments.
- Save, open, and manage files using common software.

Instructor
Tom Harrison, Jr.
CPA, CFP®
Tom Harrison earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Finance from Florida State University in 1996. He joined Lanigan & Associates, P.C. in 1997 and has been a CFP® professional since 2002. He is also a Certified Public Accountant.
His professional work has included niche-development projects involving forest products, employee-benefit-plan audits and administration, peer-review oversight, and personal financial planning.
Harrison has also served as an adjunct professor at Thomas University and Southwest Georgia Technical College.
