Learn to Effectively Mine Data with the Data Mining Course

Data mining is the process of searching through and analyzing large amounts of data in order to identify data that best fits the researcher’s intended purpose. Learning how to mine data will help you sort through the large amounts of data contained in the various data sets that are relevant to your work by providing trend analyses and helping you transform your data into information and knowledge. Data mining skills are useful to professionals and researchers in a number of disciplines, including education, business, and health care.

This course will introduce students to the basic theories and practice of data mining. Students will be exposed to data mining software and have the opportunity to use one of these programs. Lab exercises will be used to provide basic experience with data analysis research.

No previous experience with data mining is necessary. Students should have some basic knowledge of statistics and/or experience with database software (i.e., Excel or Access), but expertise is not required.

Taken independently, this course will provide students with the knowledge and practical understanding of how they can incorporate data mining into their research or everyday work.

This course may also be taken as part of the Certificate in Institutional Research curriculum. The Certificate in IR is an online program offered by the College of Education. To learn more about the Certificate, please visit the Higher Education Program website or contact the department by e-mail.
