Purpose

The Florida Resource Guide for Serving People With Mental Health Conditions is intended to assist the many persons who participate in and help with providing information and referral services, planning treatment and supports, and developing services for individuals with mental health/illness conditions.

This Resource Guide has been developed using funds provided by the Florida Department of Children and Families, Mental Health Program Office, Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF Program). The Guide is designed primarily for those TANF specialists and other mental health and substance abuse providers working within the adult mental health services, and serving persons over 18 years of age who have mental health conditions.

The Resource Guide presents a general overview of the State of Florida's publicly funded mental health system, descriptions of the most prevalent mental health conditions, and resource listings of mental health, substance abuse, and TANF specialists and agencies in Florida. The Guide can be used to assist people who may have questions about how to access supports and services in Florida for people who may be at risk of, or have, a mental health condition or psychiatric disability. Through the Guide, the terms "psychiatric disability," "behavioral health or mental health condition," and "mental illness or emotional condition," may be used interchangeably.

People who have mental illnesses or mental health conditions, their families, and other people important in their lives are encouraged, whenever possible, to be active participants in guiding and directing their own supports and services. This Guide provides an overview of this framework for change and includes suggestions, strategies, and methods for a personal and shared vision for recovery for those professionals serving people with mental health conditions.

The steps and strategies contained in this Guide may be unfamiliar to many people who have worked in the mental health field. For some people, the Guide may be a confirmation of practices and strategies they have believed in and followed for years. However, for most people, these strategies may offer new experiences and challenges as we provide supports and services within Florida's mental health system.
