Tests and Test-taking

FSU Course Exams

student thinking

Registration

Students taking an FSU course exam at CAT must be checked in between the hours their professor designated for testing. Students are warned that seating times are strictly enforced. Students who arrive too late to be seated by the cutoff time will be turned away.

Any FSU students who arrive outside their scheduled day or time will be referred to their instructor. Due to the volume of on-site exams, CAT cannot accommodate any exceptions to students' scheduled test dates. The instructor is responsible for arranging all individual exceptions.

Testing Center Guidelines for Students

  1. Students must present a valid FSU ID card with a clear photo to be able to check in. No other form of ID will be accepted (e.g. FL Driver's License, SSN, Blackboard User ID). Any students who leave to retrieve their FSU ID card or obtain a new card must return in time to be seated by the cutoff time.

  2. Students' cell phones must be turned off completely while in the testing room. If a student's cell phone vibrates, makes any alert or sound, or is otherwise found to be on in the testing room (UCC1100), the student's exam will be terminated and/or the student will forfeit the chance to test. Students must wait until they exit the testing room prior to turning their cell phone back on.

  3. Students must adhere to the FSU Academic Honor Code. Students caught cheating, falsifying identification, accessing any personal belongings, or engaging in suspicious behavior will have their exam terminated and will not be allowed back in CAT for the remainder of the semester. A report will be sent to the instructor and may result in academic and/or legal repercussions.

  4. Students may not bring loose papers (study guides, notes, or blank paper) into the testing room. If scratch paper is allowed on the test, it will be provided. If scratch paper is provided, it must be turned in before leaving.

  5. If materials are allowed, such as reference sheets or calculators, the policy regarding them will be set forth by the professor. CAT may provide reference sheets, but will not provide calculators. If the instructor allows calculators for the exam, the student must bring his/her own.

  6. Hats, head gear, wraps, etc. may not be worn during exams (except that which is prescribed for religious purposes).

  7. Students are expected to exhibit proper decorum when using CAT facilities. Violations of the following rules may result in the student being expelled from CAT for the remainder of the semester.
    • There is no talking in the testing room, except to proctors.
    • Leaving the testing room with any test content (questions, directions, etc.) or with any student responses is strictly prohibited.
    • Inappropriate behavior towards CAT staff or other students will result in dismissal from CAT.

  8. CAT is not responsible for students' grades. Students are responsible for taking any disputes to the instructor. This includes concerns about test questions/answers, scores, or concerns about being turned away for any reason.

  9. Computers in the testing room may not be used for any purpose other than to take exams. Any student caught attempting to use computers for any other purpose will be asked to leave immediately - regardless if the exam has started or not.

Testing Center Guidelines for Instructors

  1. The deadline for scheduling exams with CAT is two weeks before the start of the term. After this deadline, instructors can still schedule exams with our office but will be scheduled as availability allows. No exam dates and times are official until both the instructor and CAT have signed a Memo of Understanding. The Memo of Understanding is only binding for the duration of the semester and must be renewed every semester.

  2. The instructor will notify students of the location of CAT, all student responsibilities, and exam windows.

  3. The instructor will ensure that all posted test dates and seating times reflect the dates and times agreed upon in the Memo of Understanding. CAT cannot make changes to the pre-arranged seating dates and times, and CAT cannot make individual exceptions to the exam calendar.

  4. The instructor will set up the test in an approved testing system (i.e. Blackboard, LON-CAPA, etc.), specifying the test dates, times, and password. The password will change each day - CAT staff reserves the right to update the passwords. For security purposes, it is highly recommended that:
    • The exam be set to force completion
    • A pool of questions be used
    • The questions and/or responses be randomized or there be a separate version of the exam for each day
    • A time limit be set as proctors cannot time individual examinees

  5. The instructor will handle disputes concerning students with complaints about test content, scores, testing policies, testing in CAT, students who missed the testing window, and students requiring test make-ups or special testing conditions.

  6. The Test Supervisor, Assistant Test Supervisor, and Technical Operations Assistant will be added to the course's Blackboard site as TAs within the first two weeks of the semester. CAT will not make changes to the content of any exam or course documents.
