Tests and Test-taking

CLEP

student thinking

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) offers the opportunity for students to demonstrate college-level achievement in undergraduate courses. They are designed to award college credit for what students already know in Composition and Literature, Foreign Languages, History and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, and Business. Each exam is 90 minutes (except for English Composition with Essay) and primarily multiple-choice, though some exams do have fill-ins.

Contact your academic advisor to find out which CLEP tests you should take, and visit the CollegeBoard website for information about specific tests, to purchase study guides, and for further information on policies and procedures.

Registration and Payment

The CLEP is given on a walk-in basis, no advance registration is required. In general, the CLEP is offered Monday - Thursday from 8:30am - 6:45 pm and Friday from 8:30am - 2:45pm. Examinees are advised, however, to call to see what the availability of the CLEP will be for the week.

There are two separate payments that are required to register for the CLEP. The first payment of $15 is payable by money order or FSU Smart Chip only. The second payment of $72 is payable to CLEP by check, credit card, or money order. Both payments will be collected by CAT staff prior to registration.

EXCEPTIONS:
Student athletes please see your advisor.

There is no examination fee for military service members (Active Duty/Reserves/National Guard), but you will have to pay the college's administration fee ($15). Military personnel must present valid military ID and a second form of government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license or passport.)

Testing Center Guidelines

  1. Examinees must present 2 forms of ID to test. One must be a government-issued photo ID with a signature (e.g.: Drivers License, passport) and the other must have either a photo or signature (e.g.: Military ID, SS Card). Students may not test without proper identification.

  2. Examinees taking CLEP will not be permitted to carry any personal belongings into the testing room (UCC1100), including cell phones. CAT provides CLEP examinees with a locker to store their belongings. If an examinee taking the CLEP is found to have any personal belongings in the testing room, the examinee's test will be terminated and CAT will notify the appropriate parties.

  3. Examinees may not bring loose papers (study guides, notes, or blank paper) into the testing room. Scratch paper is provided for every exam. Any scratch paper must be turned in before leaving.

  4. Calculators are provided on the computer for those exams which require them. CAT will not provide calculators to CLEP examinees.

  5. Hats, head gear, wraps, etc. may not be worn during exams (except that which is prescribed for religious purposes).

  6. Examinees are expected to exhibit proper decorum when using CAT facilities. Violations of the following rules may result in the student being expelled from CAT for the remainder of the semester.
    • There is no talking in the testing room, except to proctors.
    • Leaving the testing room with any test content (questions, directions, etc.) or with any student responses is strictly prohibited.
    • Inappropriate behavior towards CAT staff or other students will result in dismissal from CAT.

  7. Examinees will receive their unofficial scores at the end of the testing session, unless the exam contained an essay portion. CAT is not responsible for students' official score reports, but can inform the student of the passing score required for credit.

  8. Computers in the testing room may not be used for any purpose other than to take exams. Any student caught attempting to use computers for any other purpose will be asked to leave immediately - regardless if the exam has started or not.
